Sociologists for a New Millennium: Introduction
Jim Conley

Legacy for a New Millennium, the special issue of the Canadian Journal of Sociology published in 2001, was composed of papers that provided, in the words of Harry Hiller, the issues editor, a commentary on the state of the discipline in Canada as it evolved in the last millennium. With only a few exceptions, the articles in that issue were written by senior scholars in the discipline in Canada. In a series starting with this issue, the CJS Online is following up that retrospective look at Canadian sociology with something more prospective, by sociologists in early stages of their careers. Contributors to the CJS special issue and Associate Editors of the CJS were asked to recommend graduate students, recent graduates, and junior faculty for the project. They were then asked to write about the people and works that influenced their development as sociologists, and where they think those influences will take them and the discipline in Canada in the 21st century. The essays that follow are the first contributions to be received. More will follow in the months to come, and I invite other sociologists for a new millennium in Canada to contact me about contributing to this project. I also welcome comments and responses from all sociologists in Canada and abroad.
As I had hoped, the essays are thoughtful, personal, and provocative, and they display a healthy diversity that bodes well for the disciplines future in Canada. They are listed below in the order of their appearance.
